Here and there, scattered around the city lie patches of grass. Fragments of open ground, home to a vast web of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and nematodes, which support plant health, nutrient cycling, and carbon storage. Our ground is a living, breathing ecosystem. It depends on oxygen, carbon dioxide, and gentle disturbance to thrive. The installation invites participants to kneel and whisper love words into sculptural funnels twisted in the ground. Carbon dioxide is released with each sentence pronounced, hopefully absorbed by soil microbes and root systems, contributing to soil respiration. This act, though small, echoes the natural processes of bioturbation: the mixing of soil by organisms. The “funnels of love” acts as both a symbolic and biological platform for active interaction between humans and soil ecosystems.
